Stone stacking is a contemporary art form that combines patience and mechanics. This year’s Taiwan Stone Stacking Art Festival brings together outstanding Taiwanese stone stacking artists and creators from Sweden, Spain, Iraq, Japan, and Turkey at Hualien’s Qixingtan Scenic Area. Using the area’s distinctive rounded pebbles as their medium, they challenge the limits of physics through gravity and intuition—without any adhesives or artificial supports—transforming the pebble-strewn coastline into a “borderless art museum” rich in creative depth.
Hualien County Magistrate Hsu Chen-wei stated that Hualien has long promoted low-carbon eco-tourism and has already initiated a two-way exchange with Scotland’s “European Landscape Art Festival.” The long-term strategic goal is to position Hualien as the “Asian Hub for Stone-Stacking Art,” connecting with European and American art systems to create a tourism brand with international influence. To convey the concept of sustainable coexistence with nature, the art festival fully implements the “Leave No Trace” principle.
International art masters gathered in Hualien, transforming Qixingtan into a borderless art museum. Challenging the ultimate physical balance with zero adhesive, the event has gained global recognition, ranking alongside the UK and the US as one of the world's three major rock-stacking festivals. Embracing the "Leave No Trace" environmental philosophy and low-carbon bicycle travel, the event aims to establish Asia as a hub for rock balancing art and set a new benchmark for sustainable tourism. According to the organizers, in addition to landscape art displays, the event features a stone‑themed crossover music concert, a rock balancing interactive experience zone, and a multimedia photography competition. It also connects with the "2026 Hualien Cycling Adventure" event, encouraging international travelers to enjoy a healing space away from the hustle and bustle through low-carbon, slow travel.
